Six teams will compete in the 2013 Kansas Cal Ripken 9-and-under state tournament, starting at noon today at Peebles Complex in Garden City.

With only six teams — Winfield, Cimarron River, Parsons, Paola, Dodge City and Garden City — instead of the originally scheduled eight, officials have adjusted the format to six-team pool play. The team with the best record after pool play will be crowned champions. The first tie-breaker will be head-to-head games.

Managed by Shane Burns, the Garden City 9's have 13 players on the roster. Nine-year-olds Aaron Allen, Kevin Beasley, Zane Burns, Irvin Chacon, Aaron Guevara, Christian Hampton, Caleb Metzen, Gunner Newberry, Aviel Palmer, Micah Perez, Matthew Ramos and Kaden Whitehurst, will be joined by the lone 8-year-old on the team, Sebastian Rodriguez. Mel Metzen and Willy Perez will aid Burns in the dugout as coaches.

"I think we're going to see some really good baseball," Burns said. "There's some really good kids in the area."

Garden City will begin its tournament at 4:30 p.m. today against Dodge City. They'll play two games on Saturday, squaring off with Parsons at noon and then Cimarron River in the nightcap at 6:45. On Sunday, they'll take on Winfield at 5:30 p.m. and play in the tournament finale at 2:30 p.m. Monday against Paola.

"All the kids are really excited. We're looking forward to this weekend," Burns said.

Winfield and Cimarron River will open the tournament with a game at noon.
