LAKIN — Norma Mae McCombs, 77, of Lakin, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

LAKIN — Norma Mae McCombs, 77, of Lakin, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Sept. 6, 1936, in Lakin, to Wilbur and Velma Idhe Cox. She graduated from Lakin High School in 1954.

Mrs. McCombs worked as a surgery nurse at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City and at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin. She also worked as a licensed practical nurse at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin. She loved animals, reading, cooking, handy work, traveling and spending time with her family.

Survivors include three children, Ric and wife Becky Maerz of Atlanta, Kan., De and husband John Kanak of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Jay and wife Laura Maerz of Parker, Colo.; a grandson, Josh and wife Krissy Cox of Lakin; two great-grandsons, Tristen Cox and Gabe Cox; and an expected great-granddaughter from China. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A celebration of her life will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin. A private family burial will take place at a later date.
