Violinist to perform Sunday at GCHS

Violinist Christian Howes will perform Sunday at Garden City High School, 2720 Buffalo Way.

Strings and Friends, the concert series of the Strings Academy of the Plains, will present Howes in a concert and clinic with his ensemble. The clinic will begin at 1:30 p.m., followed by a concert with the Christian Howes Trio at 3 p.m.

Both events are open to the public. Tickets are $10 ($5 for students and seniors) and are available at the door.

Howes has won many awards as a jazz performer and recording artist. He and "Southern Exposure" are coming off a six-night run at the historic Lincoln Center in New York City earlier this year, and have been touring extensively throughout the United States ever since.

Learning Quest Plan meeting set for parents

Edith Scheuerman Elementary School will hold meetings for parents on Monday to present information about the Learning Quest Plan.

The Learning Quest Plan is a tax-advantaged college savings plan administered by the State of Kansas. It is designed to help people invest for the expenses of a higher education. KJ Knoll, USD 457 Financial Officer, will be presenting information about the plan during the meeting.

There will be two meetings held during the day for parents interested in getting more information about the plan.

The first meeting will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the second meeting will be held from 7 to 7:45 p.m. The meetings will be held in the school gymnasium, 1901 Wilcox St.

Learning Quest Plan is available to all U.S. citizens and residents who want to invest for higher education. There are no age, state residency or income requirements.

Students begin vacation Wednesday

There will be no school for Garden City Public Schools Wednesday through Friday for the fall vacation.

District offices and facilities will be open, with regular business hours, on Wednesday but will be closed Thursday and Friday.

Classes will be back in session on Dec. 2.

GCCC campus closes next week for break

Garden City Community College will close Monday to Friday for Thanksgiving break.

Most campus offices and facilities will be shut down during the period, and no classes will take place.

The break also applies to the GCCC Adult Learning Center, GCCC Access and Opportunity Center, Mercer Gallery, Saffell Library and the Mary Jo Williams Comprehensive Learning Center. In addition, the library will suspend its normal evening hours Sunday and Dec. 1.

There will be limited hours, however, at the GCCC Aerobic Super Circuit in the Dennis Perryman Athletic Complex. The circuit will operate Monday to Wednesday, from 6 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.

Regular class schedules and operational hours are scheduled to resume Dec. 2.
