The Free Kansas Coalition is hosting a picnic and cooking contest from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today in Stevens Park.

Organizer Bryan Whitney, who is seeking the Democratic nomination to run against U.S. Rep. Tim Huelskamp in 2014, said the event is also a voter registration drive mainly targeted at the Hispanic community, and will also feature food, music and several speakers who will emphasize the importance of voting.

About 10 people are entered in the cook-off, so far. Those interested in participating in the contest can pay the $10 entry fee on Saturday, but everything else comprising the event is free.

Whitney said the coalition is a group of people from all political parties who share an interest in changing the political discourse in Kansas. He said it includes Republicans, moderates, Libertarians, and Democrats.
