Meats team prepares for home competition
Tyson Fresh Meats and Garden City Community College will host the 26th Annual Beef Empire Days Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest on Saturday and Sunday.
The contest is an A Division contest with six teams competing, including GCCC, Fort Scott Community College, Allen County Community College, Clarendon College (Texas), Western Texas College and Tarleton State University (Texas). Teams will compete on the GCCC campus Saturday and continue the contest on Sunday morning at Tyson Fresh Meats' Finney County plant.
Beef Empire Days also hosts a workout contest that will be at GCCC and Tyson on Sunday. This contest will include 93 competitors from Kansas State University, Texas Tech University, Colorado State University, Oklahoma State University, the University of Wyoming and the State Champion 4-H Meats Team from Sedgwick County. The students in the contest and workout will evaluate cuts of beef and pork, as well as beef, pork and lamb carcasses and determine quality and yield grades of beef during the competition.
