A free car seat check and installation is being offered today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot behind the Community Congregational Church, 603 Cedar St.

Child passenger safety technicians and instructors will be available to teach families how to transport children correctly, check for recalled seats and ensure the seat is functioning properly.

The National Child Passenger Certification Training Program certifies people as child passenger safety technicians and instructors. CPS technicians and instructors conduct child safety seat checks, where parents and caregivers receive hands-on assistance with proper use of child restraint systems and safety belts.

Safe Kids is the certifying body for the National Child Passenger Safety Training Program. It administers all aspects of CPS certification and maintains a directory of nationally certified CPS technicians and instructors. Safe Kids provides course materials, registration and customer service to CPS technicians and instructors.

Motor vehicle crashes are the number one killer of children. Many times, children are either not properly buckled into their safety seats, or parents don't realize the importance of a booster seat to ensure children fit safely in their vehicle's seat belt. Don't take a chance. Have your child's safety seat inspected.

The event is being sponsored by St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Children Service League and Russell Child Development,
