GCHS students receive award at KSU band camp

Three Garden City High School drum majors attended the Kansas State University Leadership Band Camp July 14 through 17 in Manhattan. The three were selected as "Most Inspirational" from a group of approximately 100 drum majors from around the state. The three drum majors are seniors: Haley Adams and Jordan Strawder, and junior, Seth Pineda. They were presented a certificate at the academy.

The camp focuses on building student leadership skills through various aspects of marching band areas. The students participated in a number of large and small group activities that helped to strengthen their leadership skills, teamwork, positive attitudes, and work ethic. The camp is "process driven" with the goal that each student will come away with the knowledge and confidence necessary to be leaders within their own band programs.

The three look forward to bringing what they have learned at the camp back to Garden City. They feel strongly about the importance of the GCHS band program and want to be the most effective leaders they can be for the band.

Lyle Sobba is the head band director at Garden City High School.
