Garden City High School will present the musical thriller Sweeney Todd School Edition by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler from Wednesday through Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in the GCHS Auditorium. Tickets are $7 for Adults and $5 for Students.

This version of Sweeney Todd has been masterfully adapted for high schools, and is rated PG (parental advisory for young children). Sweeney Todd is a suspenseful, heart-pounding masterpiece, and one of the most widely-produced musicals in high schools in America today. It tells the infamous tale of an unjustly exiled barber, Sweeney Todd, who loses his wife and child and returns to London to seek revenge. His urge for revenge leads him to madness, and he takes his revenge on his unfortunate customers, while his downstairs neighbor, Mrs. Lovett. resourcefully has people lining up in droves for her mysterious new meat pie recipe. Sweeney Todd teaches us that revenge never pays, as Sweeney and Lovett end up paying for their crimes.

Sweeney Todd will be played by Michael Partridge, and his counterpart of Mrs. Lovett will be performed by Maggie Unruh. Jack Spellman plays Judge Turpin, who unjustly sent Sweeney Todd away, and his associate Beadle Bamford is played by Gunner Hebrlee. Memphis Palacios plays Johanna, Sweeney Todd's daughter who has been adopted by the judge. Chris Adler plays her love-struck suitor, Anthony, who also helped Sweeney return to London. The Beggar Woman is played by Kim Cano who tries to warn everyone to the frightful events on Fleet Street, but is more involved in the plot than anyone knows. Rounding out the leads is Mario Ortega as the flamboyant Italian, Adolfo Pirelli, who becomes enraged when Sweeney beats him in a shaving contest; and Pirelli's assistant, Toby played by Jeff Bogner, who is raised by Mrs. Lovett when Pirelli goes mysteriously missing.

Because of the amazing amount of talent, the production was cast with all the leads having understudies. The understudies will have their own performance night on Nov. 6. Understudies are: Sweeney Todd played by Trace Woods, Mrs. Lovett played by Cindy Hernandez,, Judge Turpin played by Sir Dennis. Beadle Bamford played by Ben Anderson, Johanna played by Kim Cano, Beggar Woman played by Ashta Covino, Anthony played by Mario Ortega, Pirelli played by Isaac Silva, and Toby played by Jessie Fabin.

Tickets may be purchased at the door, or reserved by emailing hilta@ipad.gckschools.com When reserving seats, please give your name, night of the performance, and number of tickets reserving. All tickets will be Will Call.
