Local agencies are teaming up this weekend to combat bicycle crashes and injuries as the Finney County Safe Kids is hosting its Safe Kids Fitness and Bike Rodeo.

"This gives the kids the opportunity to get ready for summer by taking part in different activities while practicing safety and having fun," said Donna Gerstner, Safe Kids coordinator at the Garden City Recreational Commission.

The event is scheduled for 3:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Finney County Fairground. The Fitness Bike and Rodeo normally has close to 250 to 300 kids, Gerstner said, and will give out 100 helmets in various sizes. Bicyclists will have the opportunity to maneuver through an obstacle course hosted by the Garden City Police Department. Those who come to the event are encouraged to bring their own bike and helmet. The Garden City Fire Department and the Finney County Sheriff's Office will have a simulated, impaired driving test experience for teens and adults, to show the dangers of drinking and driving, and texting and driving. Gerstner said children will learn how to crawl through the "Burn House" provided by the fire department, and there's a seat check station with the Finney County Health Coalition and a cancer screening by St. Catherine Hospital.

Contact the Garden City Recreational Commission at 276-1200 for more information.

With Cinco De Mayo landing on Monday, El Remedio Market, 1005 E. Fulton St., is hosting its annual Cinco De Mayo festivities from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Danny Andrade, an employee at the business, said his family has hosted the event for more than 10 years.

The festivity will host five live bands, have give-a-ways for the public, showcase local talent and serve traditional Mexican food.

Other events include the Wrecking Ball Weekend at the Finney County Fair Ground. The show is slated for Friday and Saturday starting at 8 p.m. with Team Heats, Compact Derby, Team Consolation Heat, Pick Up Derby and Team Finals Derby. Saturday, the gates open at 6 p.m. with a Pit Party. The show starts at 8 p.m. featuring Monster Truck and Tuff Trucks, including Wicked Sickness, Ratt Attack, Nasty Boy, and Unnamed Unnamed. The event is put on by Outlaw Promotions. Tickets are available at all El-Remedio Market locations.

Students of the String Academy will have a recital at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Community Congregational Church, 710 N. Third St. There will be a reception afterwards. For more information, contact Priscilla Hallberg with The String Academy at 275-4379.

A free family event featuring games, swimming, inflatables and local businesses with community information is set for 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Garden City Family YMCA, 1224 Center St.

The "Healthy Kids Day" event will focus on building a happier, healthier kid. A free T-shirt will be given to the first 50 youths in attendance. For more information, call Sarah Tighe at 275-1199.
