(MCT) — The weekend definitely felt like summer, with highs in the mid-90s.

But mid-July will feel more like autumn by early next week, when much cooler air comes dropping down from Canada. While Monday could touch 90, forecasts indicate highs will be in the 70s and low 80s — 10 to 15 degrees below normal.

"It's not very often you're going to get 70s for highs in July" in Wichita, said Brad Ketcham, a meteorologist with the local branch of the National Weather Service.

Some folks may be digging out jackets and sweaters, he said, because lows in the 50s could flirt with breaking temperature records for mid-July. The much-cooler air will be sticking around for a while, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center, which projects much cooler than normal air lingering over much of the nation's heartland until at least the final week of the month.
