(MCT) — Kansas manufacturing jobs increased slightly year-over-year, while employment in manufacturing was unchanged in Wichita, a new report said.

Manufacturers' News Inc. said in a news release Monday that Kansas manufacturers added 824 jobs — or about a third of 1 percent — between April 2013 and April 2014.

The Illinois-based publisher of industrial information said Kansas has 4,450 manufacturers that employ 217,189 workers.

The report said Wichita has 59,100 manufacturing workers and that number did not change in the past year. It said manufacturing jobs in Kansas City declined 3.9 percent in the past year, while manufacturing employment increased 2.5 percent in Lenexa during the period.

Among manufacturing sectors, transportation equipment saw little change in employment in the past year, as did food products and industrial machinery. Sectors that saw declines were: lumber/wood, down 5.4 percent; printing/publishing, down 4.3 percent; and stone/clay/glass, down 2.7 percent.

Increases in manufacturing employment were noted in the chemicals, rubber and plastics, and instruments and related products sectors, the report said.
