Longhorns buck Cowboys; Lakin, Syracuse earn close wins

Holcomb 64, Goodland 46

At Goodland, the Holcomb Longhorns jumped out to quick early lead and cruised to a 64-46 win over the Cowboys in a Great West Activities Conference game.

The Longhorns took a 24-9 lead after the first quarter and expanded that to 37-14 at halftime.

Trey Sleep led Holcomb with 20 points on 10 field goals, and Heath Tucker added 15.

Tayler Smith led Goodland with 14 points and Gage Ihrig added 12.

Holcomb (11-3, 5-1) converted 27 field goals, including five three-pointers.

Goodland (5-10, 2-3) made 16 field goals, also with five three's.

Lakin 55, Cimarron 49

At Cimarron, Ryder Yakel scored 18 points to lead the Lakin Broncs to a win over the Cimarron Bluejays, 55-49.

Cimarron led just 8-3 after the first quarter before Lakin got hot, out scoring the Jays 23-13 in the second, then holding on for the win.

Caleb Fisher led the Jays with 17 points.

Lakin was 24 for 32 from the free throw line, while Cimarron was just 11 for 22.

Syracuse 65, Elkhart 58

At Syracuse, Dexter English scored 17 points to help the Syracuse Bulldogs win against the Elkhart Wildcats, 65-58.

While the Bulldogs played a consistent game throughout, the Wildcats waited until the second half to pick their game up.

After scoring only 17 points in the first two quarters, the Wildcats scored 15 in the third and then nearly half their total points with 26 in the fourth quarter.

SW Heights 65, Stanton County 58

At Johnson, the Southwestern Heights Mustangs defeated the Stanton County Trojans, 65-58, with the help of leading scorers Jorge Dela Torre and Cody Jennings, who each had 15 points.

The Mustangs outscored the Trojans in each period except for the third, in which they were out scored 24-21.

The leading scorer for the Trojans was Cole Smith who had a game-high 18 points.

Wichita Co. 54, Sublette 47

At Sublette, Jantz Budde scored 16 points to lead the Wichita Co. Indians to victory against the Sublette Larks, 54-47.

In this close game, the Indians had to work hard in the fourth quarter to keep the Larks from the win. The Indians' early four-point lead of 14-10 was down to just a point, 35-34, at the end of the third.

The Indians pulled ahead in the fourth after Jacob Schumacher went 7-8 in free throws.

South Gray 78, Bucklin 25

At South Gray, Tate Skinner put up 22 points to help the South Gray Rebels defeat the Bucklin Red Aces, 78-25.

The Rebel offense was on fire even in the first quarter. They started of the game with 25 points over the Red Ace's four and just kept on going.

By the end of the game, every Rebel that participated had put points on the board.

Deerfield 57, Satanta 48

At Deerfield, Anthony Mata used the home court advantage to lead the Deerfield Spartans to victory over the Satanta Indians, 57-48.

Assisted by their ability to make free throws and a few threes, the Spartans were able to stay in the lead of what could have been a much closer game.

Mata led the Spartans with 19 points, while Alex Mata added 14 and Mike Mata 12. The Spartans shot just 17 of 30 from the line.

Garrett Miller and James Turpin led Satanta with 12 points each.
