Celebratory weekend planned

Celebratory weekend planned

Pierceville Federated Church has a celebratory weekend on tap, marking two milestones for the church. The first is the dedication of the church's new activities center and the second is the 60th anniversary of its partnership with Village Missions.

There will be a dinner at noon Saturday, followed by a program of recognition of the building process and people, as well as special music and prayers of dedication for the new facility. A concert of celebration at 7 p.m. Saturday will feature vocal artist Vici Meyers.

The 10 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. worship services on Sunday will include a time for reflection at the history and ministry of Village Missions in Pierceville, with greetings from previous missionaries who have served here, followed by a message from the director of Village Missions, the Rev. Brian Wechsler from Dallas, Ore.

All services are open to the public.

A second look at education

The state of public education will be examined at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lifetree Café, 3101 Campus Drive.

The program "Pass or Fail? The State of Education" features filmed stories from Nikhil Goyal, TED talk speaker and author of "One Size Does Not Fit All: A Student's Assessment of School," and Sajan George, the founder of Matchbook Learning, a school-turnaround organization.

"Thirteen years of being in the system annihilated my creative potential," said Goyal, a recent high school graduate. "School stunted my creative prowess. I came to the realization that I was seen not as a human being, but as a test score." He now advocates a number of changes for the educational system.

Participants in the Lifetree program will discuss the current state of public education and what changes might improve the system for schools, parents and students.

Admission to the 60-minute event is free. Snacks and beverages are available.

Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting.
