Medicare

Open enrollment is all over the news. Open enrollment for the Marketplace. Open enrollment for Medicare Advantage. Open enrollment for Medicare Part D. At the senior center we are primarily concerned with open enrollment for Medicare Part D, your prescription drug plan. Each fall between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7, you have the opportunity to enroll for the first time (exception is if first becoming eligible) or to change your plan. Changes made during this time period will be effective Jan. 1, 2014.

Why would you want to consider changing your drug plan? Over the years, the drug insurance companies change their plans to meet the needs of the majority of customers. Premiums change, deductibles change, covered drugs change and, most importantly, drugs no longer covered change. Every year, drug plan customers receive an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC). This document describes how your drug plan will change next year. Note the change in premium, deductible and be sure to note if your prescriptions are still covered at the same level as the current year.

Confused by all this? You can go to www.medicare.gov and research your list of prescriptions and compare to other drug insurance companies. Follow the instructions on the website, answer all the questions and you will be presented with a list of companies to compare.

Still confused? Call the senior center. Trained Senior Health Insurance Counselors are available by appointment to help with your research. Call 272-3620 to schedule an appointment. All you need to bring is your Medicare card and your complete list of prescriptions. Appointments are required. At the senior center in the few short days of open enrollment, we have found many, many changes to the plans. Don't get caught with a plan that no longer meets your needs.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels volunteers are signing up for 2014. Two weeks are available if you and your group would like to volunteer. We are looking to fill Sept. 1 to 5, 2014, and Oct. 20 to 24, 2014. Call Patti Thummel at 272-3620 or 260-6282 for more information.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who delivered Meals on Wheels last week. Are you interested in helping with Meals on Wheels? Substitute drivers are always needed. If you would like to help, call Patti at 272-3620 or 260-6282.
